Obituary of Ilene Schur

Please share a memory of Ilene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Ilene Frances Schur, July 16-1930 – March 19, 2024 Beloved wife and partner of Jerry Schur for 70 years, loving mother to Ellen (Jonathan) Brown of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Cindy (Stuart) Jacobs of Tustin Ranch, cherished grandmother to Bess, Simon, Max, Adam and Josie, sister of Annette Ross of Laguna Woods Village. Ilene was born to Hyman (z’'l) and Sophie Kublin (z’'l) on July 16, 1930, in Chicago. She showed remarkable early talent at playing the piano and graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in music. She met Jerry on a blind date and they were married within a year setting up a wonderful home and family life in Chicago. The growing family moved to Wilmette, a Chicago suburb, where Ilene kept the home and family on track in addition to her hobbies: sewing and quilting, knitting and crocheting, jewelry making, healthy cooking, bridge and mah jong, tennis, and playing classical and jazz piano. Partial to mysteries, Ilene was an avid reader and loved the library. A three-generation family reunion in 2004 to Mexico for Ilene and Jerry's 50th wedding anniversary was a trip of a lifetime, followed by a family trip to Colorado for their 60th and Arizona for their 65th.. Jerry and Ilene traveled to Alaska, Brazil, the Caribbean, England, France Italy, Spain and Scandinavia, and the Panama Canal. When they weren’t traveling, Ilene and Jerry kept busy with friends, enjoying restaurants, performances and supporting the arts. Judaism was the central rhythm of her life and she was active in her synagogue, Hadassah chapters and various Jewish organizations in Chicago and California. She was a role model of sharing her many gifts as a project manager and problem solver through volunteering and helping others with many charities. Ilene and Jerry came to Laguna Woods first as snowbirds and then permanently about 10 years ago. Ilene enjoyed good health except for a successful fight with colon cancer; she developed dementia in the last years of her life and died March 19, 2024. Her family, grandchildren and nieces and nephews and cousins will miss her. Friends who wish may make a gift to Hadassah or any charity of your choice.
