Clare was one of my oldest and dearest friends, going back to 1964 when we met at UCSB. She was a a first-rate singer and comic actress, and we enjoyed each other’s company at school, in Paris when we both lived in Europe, and whenever I returned to the LA area. She was challenged to find her place in this world—someone with that much talent could do so many things. My heart goes out to Peter (Ft Ord, 1969-70) and to all her friends and family.

The first memories I have of Clare are as a fellow alto in Mansfield Chamber Singers who wasn’t shy to tell you when you were off pitch and/or rhythm. In her own way she had such a passion for music and as the years went by the slight annoyance at the pitch corrections turn into an admiration for her musicianship, and I actually would ask Ken Wells to place her right by me in choir to help me stay on note and rhythm. We were roommates in Mansfield’s Europe Tour 1998 which went much better than I anticipated as we were both not the most organized. She organized the shower for our daughter 19 year ago. We also shared an interest in the French language and calling her to sign Joyeux Anniversaries Joyeux Anniversaire every day on her birthday Dec. 12 became a tradition. I am so grateful to Craig for how he was her rock during her illness and extend to him and their family our condolences for her loss. Au revoir, Clare

I join all of Clare's friends in offering condolences and mourning her loss. We were friends since the late 1960's at UCSB, including our senior year when Clare, Ellen, Judy, and I shared an apartment in Isla Vista. She was the picture of elegance then and remained that way throughout her life as you can see from these photos: the earliest from her birthday in 1967 when we didn't do such a good job making her cake, to 1987 when she, Ellen, and I got together, and again in 2015 when we again met up for our annual dinner at Ellen and Bob's beautiful home.
Clare brought joy to all of us, from her love of music and France, to her exceptional ability to find humor even during the most difficult moments, to her kindness and generosity, and her loyalty to longtime friends. I only regret that she never really understood how important she was to so many of us, that she never really understood her own exceptional abilities. I know that the last few years were difficult, but I hope that she felt the love so many sent to her and that she was at peace.
I hope that the happy memories we all have of a smiling Clare will bring comfort to everyone.

Heavy-hearted over the news about Clare. Clare and I started at the Music Center Education Division about the same time in the mid-90s. Most of our shared memories involved the daily routine of our office work of putting artists in schools. But then, there were those delightfully silly moments, like when I walked into the office and she was wearing this rainbow wig. Every time I see this photo, I smile. Sending heartfelt sympathies to her loved ones. Victoria Bernal

I met Clare about 45 years ago in a French conversation class. We had been French majors a decade before then and were looking for a chance to keep up our French speaking skills. We were both living on the west side and working downtown, so we would meet for lunch from time to time. We soon discovered that we had a few other things in common, especially music; she sang and I played violin. In the early '80s we both pursued MBAs at UCLA's Graduate School of Management (now Anderson) and had mutual friends there in common. We traveled together -- fall foliage in New England, B&Bs in Vermont, the Gardner Museum, and the Boston Symphony in 1984; Vienna, Saltzburg, and Venice in 1985, dining at spots recommended by her mother who wrote travel pieces. When I married in 1987 she lamented that she had lost her travel partner. Over the next two decades we attended LA Phil and LACO concerts together, and I saw several of her Mansfield performances. We were the same age, born a month apart, and often celebrated our birthdays together at a French bistrot or Italian ristorante. When I moved to OC in 2007 she regretted the cultural loss I’d suffer behind the “Orange Curtain.” Not to worry: I quickly found rich musical experiences. However, the real divide was that it was no longer so easy for us to get together for "un café" or lunch or a walk. Clare, I’m sorry the past few years have been so difficult for you, but I’ll remember the many fun times we had for so long. Adieu! -- Ta chère Edith
